| Today is the day that the paint mask for the real hood bird is put to the test. Just painting the hood today, as it will take up most of my day. Yesterday I took all of the measurements for the paint mask, so that the alignment of the bird will be next to perfect. Everything is being documented with plenty of pics, that will eventually wind up in my restoration thread. The process with go as this.. Black base, intercoat clear, mask, silver pearl base, gold candy, tape up, shadow effect, remove all masks, final clear coat. This is the first time for me doing this, so it might not go so well. LOL! Even if it doesn't, I'll show it all here. I got no shame! lol! So keep an eye on this thread, as the black base is about to go on very soon. Oh, and for those of you who've seen my orginal design for the birds, you're in for a big surprise! HCP Style!! ![]()

| I'm excited, and nervous at the same time. This is my first time for something like this, and if it works well, something that I'm sure a lot of other will want to do themselves. This could be a history making day, man! ![]()

| Well, the black is on, and drying. It's a bit on the cool side this morning, so I'm not sure how long this will take. The black isn't laying down as flat as I would like. I can fix that, but damn! It's gonna be a long day! ![]()

| The paint started to flow better on the final coat. Air pressure problem, I think. The cool weather helped it level out like I wanted, because it retards the drying time. The risk is runs and sags, but so far, so good. Because of this risk, I laid the hood flat, instead of on the easel. This has also allowed for a better flow. The base needs to dry a while so that the mask can stick without lifting the paint when I remove it. Impatience is my biggest failure. LOL!

| Well, I can tell you already that this one will be sanded off and redone. The curves of the bird are not what they should be, and this is something I could not see until the mask was up against the black. Some are a bit on the unsmooth side. I am however going to finish the process, to see if there are any other problems I need to look for in the future. I am somewhat pissed off at this, but it's part of the trial and error process I guess. Once I get hooked up with a better program, I should have an easier time making the curves smoother. The thing is, they look great until you blow it up to this huge bird, and they become more evident. At least to me anyway.

| Always make sure that you put the damn lid on the paint gun. ![]() Lesson Learned Here: This project was doomed from the start. Stop now, and try another day! ![]()

| We start out by laying the mask on the hood, and measuring everything. I marked the points on either side and wrote down the exact measurements. I marked several points to ensure it was straight. Lesson Learned here: It is difficult to see through the transfer tape. Marking the center points BEFORE the transfer tape will make then easier to line up.

| Removed transfer tape and squeegee'd out remaining airbubbles and soapy water solution. Transfer tape removal was more of a time consuming process than expected. Lesson Learned Here: The soapy water solution may work well on vinyl stickers, but not on paint masks. The low tack vinyl did not want to stick well, and was constantly being pulled up with the transfer tape. Next time the mask will be applied dry.
