T-Top car?

I'm looking to buy a T/A and I found a '77 for $1500 and would like to know how to find out if it's an original t top car any suggestions? I have the vin and cowl tag information.

Post the cowl tag numbers and the vin and I'll break it down for you. It should have a CC1 on the cowl tag for T-tops.

Aftermarket T-Tops of the era had aluminum frames. They actually looked quite nice when installed correctly. Not sure who made them though.

It's pretty easy to cut tops out of a scrapper and weld into another car. So it's true that you never know without checking the codes.

VIN=
Pontiac Trans Am, Hardtop,400, 1977, Norwood Assembly Plant, #252566

Cowl Data=
Black Delux Buckets, Starlight black paint, That W54 that you have there should be WS4 which is for Trans Am. The BLK means that your trim and consoles/dash is black.

BTW, it is possible that you have an SE here. The Y81 or Y82 are not always on the tag for the 77 TAs. Especially on the Y81's which are the Non-T-Top SEs, such as mine. PHS Documentation will tell you for sure.

According to the red book the only TA's that year with t-tops were special editions.

Well, the birds on the door panels are red, and the dash and the steering wheel are silver unless they have faded, the paint is pretty bad, and the wheels are silver. I'd like to find an SE, but it's not something I just gotta find, I just don't want to get it and find out the T-Tops were put in by somebody. The frames are silver on the T-Tops, I don't know if that makes any difference or not, it does have a 400 in it.

Contrary to belief, not all SE TA's came out with the full gold trim package. Some only came out with part of it. Just pop the rings off of the gauges, and you'll be able to see if there's gold there. If so, it probably was. I'm guessing so by the delux seats. Of course, over the years, any of that stuff could have been put in from a donor car. Only one way to know for sure. PHS.

I don't have any pics, I can't ever catch the guy home when I'm coming through on my way home from work, but I can tell you the t tops in this car are bigger than yours.
