I painted a 76 maverick with a paintbrush and cool seal (the silver stuff you use to put on trailor roofs) when I was 16. It had alot of rust on it but to my knowledge the duct tape i used to cover the holes on the fenders and quarters never fell off.

we um "fixed" the rust in a buddys old toyota with roofing tar back in high school. then used some latex caulk to smooth it out and shot it with spray bombs. It was a real POS but it was kinda fun to see what crap we could do to it.

That car was a different color just about every week. we never even masked it, just shot it and then scraped the paint back off the windows.

YOU MIGHT LEARN SOMETHING
-maybe

i did not say-- good paint is all you needed, just that with a good paint job even crappy work will look decent/good
as for tv- keep watchin you might learn something
primer first- well all it takes is a little moisture- AND RUST WILL BEGIN,PAINT WILL BUBBLE AND BODY FILLER WILL LIFT-
i dont watch tv anymore so i cant tell u whats on the damn thing-
Huh?

(did i )???
a quick paint job will make a car look totally different, and it doesnt take a 2 month wait,or 10grand-,NOT EVERYONE THAT LOVES CARS CAN AFFORD A TOTAL RESTORE JOB

"have done many many projects over the years"- IM HAPPY FOR YOU CANT YOU TELL-
BUT HEY EARL SCHEIB WAS IN BUSINESS FOR HOW LONG?- AND NO I HAVENT HAD ANY WORK DONE FROM THEM- YES I HAVE SEEN THERE WORK, NO I DIDNT LIKE IT IT WASN'T GOOD ENOUGH-
PAINT AND WORK IS EXPENSIVE- IF SOMEONE DOES A DECENT JOB IT WILL TOTALLY CHANGE THE CARS LOOK
(THANK YOU I WILL BE HERE ALL YEAR)-
That makes no sense. I don't know about you, but I don't like to do things twice. Save your money, and do it right the first time, or not at all.

Yes new paint may make it look better but not good. Its like saying pay no attention to the man behind the curtain. Theres a pride that comes with being able to say I did that. And if your proud of shit work then no matter how much good work you do it will never be any better than your shit work.

LOL! Yeah, but when you were done, did you consider yourself a real body man/painter?

i will be taking new pictures of my trans am this wednesday. when i was there last week, the body shop hadnt gotten enough work done to warrant my taking pictures. i had delivered a new trunk lid 2 doors 2 front fenders and a front nose. so i am guessing that he has done work on these items that will be worth taking pictures of. all of you are talkign about quick fast restorations. there is really no such thing. my restoration which will include the transplant of a 455 motor a manual transmission air conditioning (functional) all electronics will be functional new interior the car will be painted black and have the gold emblems but no goofy pinstripes like alot of trans ams out there. that imo is just tacky. my car wont be done until next spring, which i am ok with . i cant wait for it to be done but you can be sure i wont be crying because it is taking so long. a good job takes time and it cant be rushed. all the body work and metal work is being done now and if it takes 2 months then so be it. when the paint is put on the car it will have no waves and will never crack or have issues because it will have been done right.

I've been working on my car for 2 1/2 years. At first I just wanted it running, then I decided to rebuild it, then I wanted a 4 speed and so on and so on. This stuff takes forever. At least yall can find parts for Trans Ams. Try finding shit for a '59.

Thats one of the reasons I started the bird. My last resto was a 32 essex that I ended up selling to my boss because i couldnt find the part to do what I wanted. He turned it into a drag car.

Yeah that maverick was a sleeper, Had a 502 crammed under the hood. 16 inch screw driver as a shifter and the wiring was so cobbled together it should have burnt to the ground. She was my silver bullet. Bucket seats out of a yugo, plexiglass for the rear window and 2x4's holding the leafsprins to the trunk.
Ive seen self proclaimed body men stuff a hole with newspaper then bondo over the top. Then say it looks good from my house.

Ok, say I'm working on this. I pull the dents, take all the surface rust off. What do I clean it with before primer? Some kind of degreaser?

I'd like to get this done in the next week or so. If I do OK then the Pontiac is next.

Soap and water. Then use a cleaning solvent if you want. Every paint company makes one or two or three.
