Glass question

On My 66 Catalina Coupe there are what looks to be small rocks (rust?) embedded in the drivers side door glass and vent window. I cannot seem to remove it with anything. has anyone else ever had this problem? Jeff

Any chance that there was some welding done around there. Pretty common to get weld splatter that burns into the glass then rusts if windows were not properly covered during the welding. Not a lot you can do for it. You may try some glass buffing compounds, but you can never fully repair it.

The car is wearing the original paint and it has no damage to the door . I dont believe the car has been weled on. That could be. I have some other glass, but what a hassle to change it over. Jeff

Just recently our welding rig at work was showered in sparks from a grinder 25' away. Melted right into the glass. I dont think you can much but replace.

Yep. That's what it sounds like to me too. either a welder or a grinder.

The door glass on those cars is tempered. I'm going with welding or grinding splatter like Mike and Chuck.

My '59 does too. And where the windshield curves it's pulling apart pretty good. I've got glass insurance and am waiting for a rock ship.

Since I can't seem to find the camera I will have to agree that it is probably grinder splatter. It is not delaminating for sure. I guess I will be changing the glass.

Good point Graeme. I don't remember for sure what year they went to tempered on the side glass either, but I know in 66 it was tempered, at least on the big cars. I'm pretty sure in 62 it was still laminated also. Maybe it had to do with whether the side glass was straight or curved, which would mean that 65 would likely be the first year of tempered side glass.

Is it pitted or on top? Have you tried scraping it with a razor blade?

WOW, I was picturing just a few marks. I can see why you want to replace it. It sure does look like weld/grind issues. I don't think there is anything you could do to nurse those back to health.
