Smile Anyone ever removed a windshield and back glass?

It's getting closer to time to pull the glass out of the bird. The front windshield is already cracked and needs replacement so if I break it it doesn't matter. The back glass is good, but has a defog heater deal built in.

Anyway, what is the best way to pull the glass (without breaking the rear glass)? And how is the defog heater thing attached to the rest of the car? Is there a wire in there?

Thanks!

Easy remove the interior and exterior trim unhook the defrost from the rear and or antenna from the front. Buy one of these New Glass Windshield Removal Hand Held Tool Remove Auto - eBay (item 220402674401 end time May-24-09 16:56:24 PDT) cut the ribbon gently push out the glass.

You can use other kinds of methods but for 13 bucks this tool is great. Also let the car sit in the sun for a couple hours before it makes the ribbon soft and easier to cut.

Just like Chuck said,
Pretty much any parts store will have the window cutting tool and get a pair of suction cups, they help out. When using the cheapy suction cups sold at the parts store you must work fast because they don't hold long. Some advice about the cutting tool; take your time and be careful, it takes a lot of pulling force to cut the ribbon and the blade may pop out from underneath the window.

All right, I got one of those tools. Since the old windshield is cracked anyway I have nothing to lose in trying to get it out. I'll have to be more careful with the back glass.

Anyone know how to get the trim off around the windshield and back glass? Need another tool, don't I ?

Just be careful putting it back in, having two people really helps! because once you set it, it won't be easy to move it if it's not straight when you set it. Good luck!

The arrow shape one is the tool you need. - Harbor Freight Tools - Quality Tools at the Lowest Prices

You insert the arrow under the trim slide it sideways until you find the clip. Using the flat side of the arrow work it under the clip and gently pry the clip away from the body. You'll feel the clip release from the molding.

And since I dont have any friends I always have to install glass myself. Just use masking tape to find the center of the glass and a reference point on the body. Center of the window opening works good.

Thanks, I always wondered how the hell you use one of those tools. I ordered it so I should be able to pull the glass soon.

Old worn out clips bend good trim, and often do not hold it properly. Plastic ones break, and the metal ones rust, break or bend out of shape. You can get the clips at Autozone. Doesn't matter which ones you use. Both work just fine, but I like the plastic ones better, because they seem to work better.

Mike, not sure if you have an idea of what you'll use to re install your glass, but this is what we used when replacing the glass in my 69. It's Butyl Rubber sealant tape really nice and soft and easy to work with. Best of luck to you!
