What is a good code reader?

I am thinking of buying a code reader. It would like to get an OBD 1/OBD 2 code reader to cover the '87 and '01 Trans Am's. What is good?

That all depends on what you're looking for. Do you just want a code reader that will tell you the code numbers that you then look up, or do you want interactive that tells you trouble codes and also gives read outs of real time sensors, captures data while driving, etc?

This is the one I have. It came with cables to do old and new GM, ford, chrysler, and can be updated online, and additional cables to do foreign are available if you need them. It will not do things like check power accessories, door locks etc like some scanners do, but for regular engine diagnostics/sensor/computer related problems, it works great and is easy to use.

ODB1 and 2 are different, ODB1 can be read with a paper clip on some vehicles, or a light on others. ODB2 is more modern, alot of those code readers are okay but the more you spend the more use they are as alot of codes are generic.

I use this hooked up to my laptop for my OBD1 truck and my OBD1.5 van.

OBD Diagnostics, Inc. - ALDL (GM OBD1) Cable with 12 pin Connector

And this for any OBD2 cars that come my way...

CanOBD2 Diagnostic Tool - EQUUS PRODUCTS, INC.

I'd actually like to sell this since I don't have an OBD2 car and most auto parts stores will scan them for free.

Thanks for the replies. Unless the dual OBD 1/ OBD 2 code readers come on sale, I'll probably get separate OBD 1 and OBD 2 code readers based on the price of the units.
