| help i have a 65 goat with a 400 ci engine.the alternator/fan/ps belt just shredded and i believe the belt was the wrong one for this engine.how can i find the right belt, this was a gates 7550 xl and the same replacement belt won't fit on the pulleys that it is supposed to fit(in line) even when i move the adjusting bolts all the way out.i found a code on the front of the head that is C272362 YS. it has air,not connected so those pulleys have no belt and it looks like he used a small belt and forced fit it usine the wrong pulley.thanks | |||||||||||

| Just measure what length you need and an auto parts store will get you what you need. ![]()

| Guess as to how much more or less you need... you have a 55" belt now... the belts come in 1/2" increments and the adjuster will give you a bit of latitude, it need not be exact. Often accessories have been added or removed or pulleys changed it is not uncommon for the stock belt to not fit correctly. I checked application and you could use between a 52"-59" belt so its impossible to say from here. the belt you have is: 1962 American Motors Ambassador V Belt Gates American Motors V Belt Brand: Gates Mfr Part #: 7550 Be the first to write a review gates auto xl v belt effective length 55 outside circumference 55.58 top width 0.41.

| It order to measure for a belt, it's best to use an old belt. A long old belt that you can cut in two. Adjust the accessories all the way down, so that you will have room to adjust the new belt, and wrap the old belt arounf them. Then mark the belt and straighten it out and measure it. That's what it will be. If say your measurmment is 50-1/4" then you'll want a 50.5" - 51" belt, providing you have that much room for adjustment. In other words, you'll round up to the nearest 1/2" That is why you want all of you accessories slid in. You can then adjust your new belt out if it's a bit larger.
