  • What's the best way to remove paint from plastic?

Ok so I scored these real nice 1975 Firebird grills last weekend. But the previous owner sprayed them gold. I wanna remove the gold without screwing up the plastic or the original finish.

Wonder what he did no prep them for the gold. If he sanded them your effort to remove the gold paint could be for nothing

If he didn't id try a little paint thinner on a rag .

Don't look like they were sanded. Theres a few spots that the paint flaked off and it looks clean.

DON'T use thinner or any solvent. You'll make a mess. The best way if sanding.

What about wd40 then. If you can get up under it, it might break free

Then he won't be able to repaint. Oil will soak into the plastic.

I don't wanna mechanically remove it. I need something I can spray on and rise off. The reason being I wanna keep the original finish because I have an idea.

I would try scrubbing with food oil veg corn canola...

Then a non acetone nail polish remover

                      Then rubbing alcohol

The rubbing alcohol will likely work but start with the less abrasive stuff first and gradually work your way to the harder stuff

What is the end finish you want? Soda blasting or bead blasting may be the least abrasive.Acetone will melt plastic.

Bead blasting will kill it. I want down to the original finish
