Here you go without looking at my book I was correct. I went to autozone.com and typed in 77 Pontiac firebird engine code P. And look at that a Pontiac timing gasket.

          Genius Chuck, pure genius, lol
I looked at the autozone website the other day and noticed it asked for P or R vin code, but I didn't even think about looking at the dang gasket pattern lol.
          Thanks Chuck, very much appreciated!

You posted it, follow the link. You busted my balls when I said it had a Olds in it because of the R in my VIN.

The problem with all of these codes on older cars is that you can look at 5 different sources and get 5 different answers. Back then, things weren't logged like they are now. Data wasn't put into computers, and saved for future generations. So a lot of mistakes and misinformation is out there on these cars. There's also a lot of people writing books who probably shouldn't be. LOL! Either way, you can get close to what your car was, but what does it really matter? Unless you're building a bone stock concours car, you or no one else should really care. To take a quote for the Red Rocker. "It's all just mental masturbation!"

One shade tree way to check is to see if the starter wires are routed on the drivers side or passengers side from the factory. Since Pontiac's starter is on the drivers side and Cheby's starters are on the passengers side.
